Hearing Test
If you think you may be developing hearing loss, scheduling a hearing test with our team is the best course of action. Diagnostic hearing tests allow us to determine the scope and nature of your hearing impairment, giving us the information we need to recommend the best treatment option.
At East Tennessee Audiology we use the best equipment and techniques in the industry to find the exact cause of your hearing loss. Our audiologists have extensive experience with diagnosing hearing problems, so you can feel confident that we can help your unique situation as well.
Purpose of a Diagnostic Hearing Test
Diagnostic hearing tests can provide you and your audiologist with a wealth of information. Hearing loss is unique to every person, and a diagnostic hearing test allows our team to understand the problem more fully and use this information to determine the best way to help you.
Your diagnostic hearing test will also give us a reference point to which we can refer over time, allowing us to determine how your hearing changes with treatment.
Types of Hearing Tests
Diagnostic hearing evaluations include several tests that evaluate different aspects of your hearing impairment. When you come in for an assessment, we will conduct several of the following tests:
- Auditory brainstem response (ABR) test
- Air conduction test
- Electronystagmogram
- Bone conduction test
- Speech test
- Tympanometry test
- Distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOE) test
We will determine which tests to perform based on your age, medical history, and hearing loss symptoms.
What You Can Expect During a Diagnostic Hearing Evaluation
If you have never undergone a hearing test before, you may be wondering what to expect during your appointment.
Hearing evaluations are painless and typically last between 30 and 40 minutes. Before we begin your test, we will ask you to fill out a form with your medical history and any medications or supplements you currently take.
After reviewing your symptoms and medical history, we will conduct a few different hearing tests that evaluate various aspects of your hearing. If you report specific symptoms, such as tinnitus or balance problems, we will be sure to test for these issues during your evaluation.
Once we complete your evaluation, we will discuss our findings with you and, if necessary, go over treatment options. We will also spend time answering any questions and addressing any concerns you may have.
